I should be much obliged if you would allow a postponement of the date by which Mr. Bradley must exercise his option as I shall

have to refer the matter to the Director of

Colonial Audit. Under the terms of their

appointment Assistant Auditors are entitled to

"the same privileges and status as are given to other Colonial Officers of corresponding

rank", no reference being made to salary. I

could not, on my own responsibility, agree to

the implication that the post of Assistant

Auditor is of Junior rank to many of the

officers who would under the new regulations

be entitled to first class passages.

The Honourable Colonial Secretary replied that

the limit had been fixed after careful consideration on a

monetary basis and implies no decision as to the status of

any office or officer, and as at present advised the

Government was not prepared to consider any variation of

the Order.

7. Mr. Bradley has already been provided with

first class passages to or from England on three occasions

and I submit that, apart from any question of personal

comfort, it would be lerogatory in these circumstances

and to his position as an Assistant Auditor of 7 years

service in this Colony to travel second class. In fact

he would not be willing to allow his wife and children to travel second class. He is thus penalised by being

forced to remain under the old rules.
